PROGRAM

Join us as junior vocalists compete for the Mel and Jena Hakola Prize for Academic and Vocal Excellence, an endowed BW scholarship. Colette Caspari is our 2020 Mel and Jena Hakola Prize Winner. The 2021 vocalists competing are: Lily Benson, Michael Bindeman, Madelyn Deininger, Mark Doyle, Maggie George, Olivia Helman, Ricky Moyer, Maire Pasquinelli, Andie Peterson, Ian Rakunas, Lauren Senden, Sydney Shook, Mia Soriano, Sophia Sorrentino, Sarah Strezewski, Kinza Surani and Kylie Sykes.

The Prize is awarded by outside judges of the competition to a Conservatory of Music student majoring in vocal performance and music education. The funds are distributed over the spring and fall semesters as long as the winner maintains at least a 3.3 GPA and remains a student of the Conservatory in good standing.

Mel Hakola was a distinguished voice teacher at BW for 38 years prior to his retirement. The Mel and Jena Hakola Prize for Academic and Vocal Excellence was created to encourage and reward voice students who demonstrate exceptional vocal, musical, intellectual and creative talents. It also acknowledges students who have the potential to make a significant contribution to music performance. The purpose of the prize is to promote and recognize a high standard of academic and musical excellence among voice students at BW.

In accordance with CDC and Cuyahoga County Board of Health recommendations, audiences will be masked at all indoor Conservatory performances, regardless of vaccination status. For public safety, those who do not comply will be politely asked to leave by the senior official present at the event. Physical distance is still encouraged between the stage performers and the first rows of the audience.

If you are unable to log in simultaneously to the live performance, the recording typically remains available throughout the remainder of the day, so you will be able to enjoy the program that evening as well.
