Power, Elegance and Joy
A concert of masterworks that embodies the power, elegance, and joy of a wind ensemble in concert with a live audience! We begin our program with a rousing opening fanfare that heralds the dawning of a new day with Karel Husa’s Smetna Fanfare. This powerful composition was written in 1984 on the occasion of the Czech composer Bedrich Smetna’s centennial celebration. Raised in the same motherland, Husa celebrates his fellow countrymen by utilizing two excerpts from Smetna’s symphonic poem The Wallenstein’s Camp.
The heart of the program is Ingolf Dahl’s Sinfonietta. This composition took the world renown composer over ten years to write. The composer used this opportunity to learn more about writing for winds by asking his students at USC to play phrases alone and together for over a decade. The result is perhaps the finest example of nuance, elegance, and refinement ever written for a wind ensemble. Dahl’s Sinfonietta can be conceived as a “concerto for wind ensemble,” as it features the virtuosity of each section in the ensemble. For this reason and so many others, artist-scholars have long placed the Dahl Sinfonietta as the high-water mark for compositional excellence for the wind ensemble.
Our concert concludes with Fantasia in G by Timothy Mahr. This exhilarating composition is a joyful celebration inspired by the opening line of Johann von Schiller’s poem Ode to Joy (“Joy, bright spark of Divinity.”) Using the Ode to Joy theme from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, this composition joyfully concludes the evening’s musical journey in complete celebration of the role that live music has in building and bonding our community.
In accordance with CDC and Cuyahoga County Board of Health recommendations, audiences will be masked at all indoor Conservatory performances, regardless of vaccination status. For public safety, those who do not comply will be politely asked to leave by the senior official present at the event. Physical distance is still encouraged between the stage performers and the first rows of the audience.
