In this informal lecture with musical illustrations, Dr. Michael Marissen will explore questions of anti-Jewish rhetoric in the Gospel of John and in Johann Sebastian Bach’s musical settings of Martin Luther’s German translation of the Gospel.
Dr. Michael Marissen is an emeritus professor of music history at Swarthmore College, and has also been a guest professor on the graduate faculties at Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of eight books, including most recently “Bach and God” and “Bach against Modernity,” both published by Oxford University Press, and he has written many articles for academic journals like the Harvard Theological Review and Music & Letters, as well as several essays for broader venues like The New York Times and The Huffington Post.
